Olive's Blog: Saturday, November 12

Japan has been great so far and today was very fun. Unfortunately, it was our last full day with our host sisters from Bunkyo high school. Before we left to do our final activities with each other, we had a farewell party. All of the girls from the junior classes came and we ate Japanese and American snacks, played a pretty competitive game of musical chairs, and performed a song and dance for the Bunkyo students. After that, a group of us decided to go to Harajuku. This is a very famous part of Tokyo. When we got there, it was like a sea of people. With twelve of us in the group, it was very difficult to stay together! First we took Purikura (Japanese photo booth that makes everyone look adorable), then we went and bought cotton candy that was a gigantic cone of rainbow larger than our heads. It took  all twelve of us to eat it! If we hadn't had enough sugar already, after that we went and bought crepes. I had a chocolate and strawberry one. Other people also bought bubble tea. It was delicious! After that, our hosts showed us around Harajuku. We went to many stores including the Sanrio store where we bought cute items from our favorite characters. Harajuku is filled with bright lights, bustling people, and tons of stores that are selling adorable goods. The main thing that I noticed about Harajuku was how unique everyone was. In America, people often look similar and all have the same style. In Japan, and especially Harajuku, everyone dresses in a way that they feel expresses themselves. I saw so many different fashions while shopping today. There were people with bows all over their clothes, people wearing pants with very wide legs and platform shoes, and even some girls dressed in Lolita style. They had purple hair, gigantic puffy skirts, and teddy bear backpacks. They also wore big blue contact lenses. I thought it was cool that everyone accepts other people's styles. Nobody was getting stared at. I noticed that there doesn't seem to be one particular way of dressing that is vey popular, everyone just wears what they like best. It was great for me because I got to see so many cute outfits!
